Mike DeWine, Governor of Ohio, said that mounting evidence indicates prop betting is damaging to athletics in the state and highlighted the risks associated with micro prop bets controlled by individual players. The statement was made on X.

"The evidence that prop betting is harming athletics in Ohio is reaching critical mass," said Mike Dewine. "A particular problem is with micro prop bets – prop bets on highly specific events within games that are completely controlled by one player."

Recent regulatory changes in Ohio have targeted prop betting and micro prop bets after growing concerns about their impact on sports integrity and athlete safety. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, state officials have restricted certain wagers following incidents involving threats against college athletes.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission reported at least 41 cases of threats to athletes related to prop betting in the past year, prompting stronger oversight and new betting restrictions.

A 2024 analysis by Legal Sports Report found that states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania have also tightened restrictions on prop and micro betting in college sports. Some states have banned these bets entirely due to integrity concerns.

DeWine is the Republican Governor of Ohio, previously serving as Attorney General and U.S. Senator. He is known for initiatives in public health, education, and prioritizing sports betting regulations, according to Ballotpedia.
